So there's been a report of grooming or abuse - what do we do next? - July 2024

The Building Blocks of Safeguarding Culture

BBSafe – So there’s been a report of suspected grooming, abuse, sexual abuse, neglect or exploitation in my organisation – we’ve done the external reporting – what do we do next??

Whether we are working with children, people with disabilities,  older people or other vulnerable people, we know about the part where we are supposed to report to authorities – whether that is police or some other regulator. But what happens then…? Sometimes our policies seem to stop at the part about external reporting.

At BBSafe we always aim to break through the complexity of safeguarding to make it as simple as possible to do safeguarding well.

If you have been to one of our webinars before, you may recall that Building Block 4 is “Response”. We think that responding well, and in alignment with our values or mission, must consider three components:

In our free BBSafe July webinar, we will cover issues that can help to prepare your organisation to respond in alignment with your values or mission, and in a way which builds and strengthens your culture, including:
– how to support those who may have been harmed
– how to support a work team who may be impacted
– investigations – who should do them and when, and what to do with the findings
– apologies and redress
– closing out the process and learning from every report

Please join us on 19 July, 12-1pm AEST. It’s free but please register here:

Also in July, our next BBSafe – Safeguarding Lead Coaching Program will kick off. We created the program because we strongly believe that, as safeguarding is a relatively new discipline, requiring a unique mix of regulatory knowledge, cultural leadership and excellent communication skills, we wanted to share our deep knowledge gained over more than a decade of working in this space. It is like a “microcredential” in safeguarding building on the skills you already have. We would love to tell you more about it so please get in touch if you’re interested to know more sarah.lim@bbsafe.com.au

Feel free to share this newsletter with colleagues. And reach out anytime if we can be of assistance.

Sarah
