BBSafe | Safeguarding Culture & Compliance
Use the Building Blocks to start assembling your own safeguarding toolkit.
People with disability are at greater risk of experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. Effective safeguarding is essential to reducing these risks and protecting the rights, safety and wellbeing of NDIS participants.
Compliance and Beyond has been developed to help NDIS providers and workers understand how safeguarding can be applied in everyday practice, to create safer services and supports.
The project is delivered by Micah Projects in partnership with BBSafe, with funding from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
Content has been informed by people with lived experience of disability, family members and disability-sector professionals. Their perspectives and expertise have helped ensure the project reflects real-world experiences, challenges and practical approaches to preventing harm.

People with disability are more likely to experience violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation than people without disability. This can take many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional and financial abuse.
Safeguarding is any action that protects a person’s right to be safe from harm, abuse, neglect or exploitation by making sure the systems, relationships and environments around a person actively support their safety and wellbeing.
When everyone understands their part in safeguarding, we are all better placed to prevent harm and to respond well when it does occur.
Boards and leadership teams need to set the tone, embed safeguarding in governance and culture, and make sure the right systems are in place.
Workers need to understand the risks participants face, actively implement safeguarding measures, and know how to respond when something is not right.
People with disability and their carers, families and supporters need to know their rights and how to raise concerns.
